New page

The White Edition Oz books was a reprint series of the Oz books by Reilly & Lee while owned by Contemporary Books.

The series featured white spines and cover borders with new art adaptation by Dick Martin. These matched the cover design for the fortieth Oz book, Merry Go Round in Oz. The books were issued in these editions in 1964 and 1965, and were available through the 1970s.

It seems there were plans early on to publish the entire Famous Forty in this format, however, only the original fourteen books by L. Frank Baum were issued.

Reilly & Lee published the books in the same size as their previous editions of the Oz books in hardcover.

Paperback versions of the books were published by Rand McNally in 1971. Rinkitink in Oz and The Lost Princess of Oz were not issued as paperbacks. Cheap paperbacks of Ozma of Oz (containing some text editing to correct Dorothy's speech) and The Magic of Oz were issued by Scholastic, based on the white edition versions.

In 1978, Contemporary Books printed their own small-size paperbacks of seven of the Oz books using the White Edition designs and simplified covers. These bore the publisher's name as Contemporary Books or Regnery. These were abandoned when Del Rey took a license to reprint the Oz books in paperback.

International versions (with binding variants) were printed in Canada by Coles Books and in the UK by Hutchinson Books, who only printed four of the books.
